KUTIR EXPIERENCE – FIRST CLASSROOM

Kutir Experience - 55 students from world wide are now enjoying the wonderful Kutir experience as they are now attending the classes in the MI Campus s first Kutir Classroom.

Built with natural, environmentally-friendly local materials like bamboo, bricks and thatch, the kutir makes students feel like they have stepped back in time to learn with the sages of the Śrīmad- Bhāgavatam.

But the hut doesn’t eschew modern facilities either – electricity inside provides power for ceiling fans and wall projectors to give Power Point presentations.

“The mixture of ancient and modern is ideal,” says Mayapur Institute Director Padmanayana Das. “Many students have commented that ‘Just by entering the kutir, we feel like studying."

ŚRĪLA PRABHUPĀDA DISAPPEARANCE DAY -- DĀMODARA MONTH OR KĀRTIKA -- 23 OCTOBER 2017 MONDAY – CATURTHĪ

HIS DIVINE GRACE A.C. BHAKTIVEDĀNTA SWĀMĪ ŚRĪLA PRABHUPĀDA, FOUNDER ĀCĀRYA OF THE INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR KṚṢṆA CONSCIOUSNESS -- DISAPPEARANCE DAY

 CARRYING FORTH OUR INHERITED LEGACY

“I’ve given you this big ISKCON movement. If you can, please expand it. At least maintain it. Don’t let this decrease. Please cooperate”, and then Śrīla Prabhupāda started to cry. Everyone in the room started crying. That was probably the most painful moment of my life, to see Śrīla Prabhupāda cry... [Śrīla Prabhupāda Memories -- H.G. Udayananda Prabhu].

In 1965, when Śrīla Prabhupāda left the auspicious land of Vṛndavan to come to the west, no one thought he would be so successful; even his own God-family did not think so, and showed him little or no support. Twelve years down the line, he had travelled around the globe fourteen times and established one-hundred and eight centers worldwide. His determination was strong.

Śrīla Prabhupāda once remarked, “I am an old man. I may die at any moment. But please, you all carry on this sankirtana movement. You have to become humble and tolerant. As Lord Caitanya says, be as humble as a blade of grass and more tolerant than a tree. You must have enthusiasm and patience to push on this Kṛṣṇa conscious philosophy.”

Śrīla Prabhupāda wanted nothing more from us than to work together cooperatively and to spread the sankirtana movement worldwide. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu foretold that His holy names will be spread in every town and village of the world. In the preface of the Bhagavad-Gītā As It Is, Śrīla Prabhupāda wrote that even if one person becomes a devotee, he will consider his humble attempt to be a success. No one can even begin to fathom the selflessness and determination of Śrīla Prabhupāda. To honour his Divine Grace, a beautiful puspa Samādhi, or monument, was built for him in Śrī Dhām Māyāpur. On his Disappearance Day, hundreds of devotees gather there to pay tribute to the Founder Ācārya of the International Society for Kṛṣṇa Consciousness.

In Śrīla Prabhupāda’s Puṣpa Samādhi, the celebrations of Śrīla Prabhupāda’s Disappearance Day begins with a Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam class given by his Divine Grace, followed by a beautiful, ecstatic kīrtan. Then, starting at 09:30 am, glorifications begin. On this sacred disappearance day of his Divine Grace, not only does the community of both international and local devotees come together, but also many of the neighbouring Gaudiya Maths join together to honour one of the greatest personalities of all time.

Around 11:30 am, there is a Mahā Abhiṣek of Śrīla Prabhupāda’s murti, and all his disciples and senior Vaiṣṇavas from the Gaudiya Maths bathe him, while an ecstatic kirtan is performed. Once the Abhiṣek is completed and Śrīla Prabhupāda is dressed in new cloth, he is offered over a thousand preparations made by his loving pūjaris and other community members, and this is followed by Puṣpāñjali. Once Puṣpāñjali is completed, a Mahā Ārati is performed. During this time, Śrīla Prabhupāda’s disciples and some grand-disciples offer his Divine grace fragrant garlands of flowers. Once Ārati is over, the devotees are invited to honour a sumptuous feast.

In the evening, the devotees gather and have kirtan until the tirobhava muhurta, or the auspicious time Śrīla Prabhupāda left this world. At 07:25 pm, the song “Sapārṣada Bhagavad Viraha Janita Vilāpa” [Je ānilo prema dhana], written by Śrīla Narottama Dās Thākura, is sung. The atmosphere is intense, as a wave of deep and heartfelt prayers fill the Samādhi Mandir. As the devotees look up at the effulgent murti of Śrīla Prabhupāda, they sing with all their hearts and shed fervent tears of simultaneous separation and happiness. It is indeed a festival of mixed emotions. After the mūhurta is observed, a maha arati is performed for Śrīla Prabhupāda whilst the Śrī Śrī Gurv-aṣtakam prayer is sung. The devotees are supplied with ghee lamps to offer to Śrīla Prabhupāda.

This is a day which is spent in full absorption of His Divine Grace, and if we are fortunate enough, we will experience that same absorption every day, living and breathing Śrīla Prabhupāda’s teachings and instructions in our day-to-day lives. Śrīla Prabhupāda and this Saṅkīrtana movement are the only way for us to develop pure love for Krsna, [and thus get back home, back to Godhead] in this day and age.

H.G. Udayananda Prabhu recalls Śrīla Prabhupāda’s final days: “One day Śrīla Prabhupāda said, ‘I’ve given you this big ISKCON movement. If you can, please expand it.’ He said, ‘At least maintain it. Don’t let this decrease.’ Then he said, ‘Please cooperate,’ as he said so many times before. And then Śrīla Prabhupāda started to cry. Everyone in the room started crying. That was probably the most painful moment of my life, to see Śrīla Prabhupāda cry. So we have this movement. It’s Śrīla Prabhupāda’s movement. We have the good, we have the bad, and we have the ugly. But we just have to be determined to never leave the ISKCON movement. We just have to always try to push it forward. If there’s a problem, push it forward. Because when you leave ISKCON, you make Śrīla Prabhupāda cry. So let’s make Śrīla Prabhupāda happy and push on Krishna consciousness to every town and village”.

ŚRĪ DHĀM MĀYĀPUR WEST BENGAL INDIA – ŚRĪ VIŚVARŪPA MAHOTSAVA -- ACCEPTANCE OF SANNYĀSA BY ŚRĪLA PRABHUPĀDA – THIRD MONTH OF CATURMASYA BEGINS [PŪRṆIMĀ SYSTEM] [MILK FAST FOR ONE MONTH] -- 6 SEPTEMBER 2017 WEDNESDAY – PŪRṆIMĀ

Early in the year of 1959, while residing in Sri Vrindavan Dham, Srila Prabhupada [then known as Abhay Charan De], had a dream in which Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur appeared to him. Srila Prabhupada’s spiritual master motioned repeatedly for him to follow, urging for him to come and become a sannyasi.

When Srila Prabhupada awoke, he contemplated this dream very seriously. Practically, he was already living the life of a Vaishnava sannyasi, having renounced material life and dedicated his mind, body, and words completely to the service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. However, he considered that Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur’s instruction that he should take sannyasa was another part of his original instruction to go and preach in the West. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur had accepted sannyasa to further the mission of Lord Caitanya, and Lord Caitanya Himself had accepted sannyasa in order to be respected by the masses and thus to spread the sankirtan movement more effectively.

After deliberating, and although humble by nature, Srila Prabhupada approached Bhaktivilasa Tirtha Maharaja, the head of the Gaudiya Math in Kolkata, to request his permission to take sannyasa. However, they did not come to an agreement. Bhaktivilasa Tirtha Maharaja requested Srila Prabhupada to join the Caitanya Math and act under its direction, and after some time, then, perhaps, he could take sannyasa. Srila Prabhupada was not opposed to this, but his primary mission was to carry out his spiritual master’s instructions to print books and travel to the West to preach, and he did not want to wait any longer. It became clear that Bhaktivilasa Tirtha Maharaja would not be able to immediately support or encourage Srila Prabhupada in this mission, and so Srila Prabhupada declined to join the Caitanya Math in Calcutta.

This communication made Srila Prabhupada uncertain about taking sannyasa, but when Srila Prabhupada next spoke to his Godbrother Keshava Maharaja about it, Keshava Maharaja strongly encouraged him to do it.

Srila Prabhupada recalled that: *“I was sitting alone in Vrndavana, writing. My Godbrother insisted to me, ‘Bhaktivedanta Prabhu, you must do it. Without accepting the renounced order of life, nobody can become a preacher.’ So he insisted. Not he insisted; practically my spiritual master insisted. He wanted me to become a preacher, so he forced me through this Godbrother: ‘You accept.’ So, unwillingly I accepted.”*

The arrangements were made, and on the morning of Visvarupa Mahotsava in September of 1959, on the second floor of the Keshavaji Gaudiya Math in Mathura, Abhay Charan De accepted sannyasa and became Abhay Charanaravinda Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja.

The ceremony was attended by only the few residents of the matha. Keshava Maharaja presided over the ceremony, which was conducted by his disciple Narayana Maharaja, while sweet kirtan was performed by Akincana Krsnadasa Babaji.

To everyone’s surprise, including Srila Prabhupada’s, Keshava Maharaja asked Srila Prabhupada to speak after the ceremony concluded. Although most of those assembled spoke Hindi, and only a few understood English, Srila Prabhupada chose to speak in English.

This decision was significant, because his acceptance of sannyasa was meaningful to him only as a step towards fulfilling his spiritual master’s instruction to travel to the West and preach in English. He was already following the regulations of sannyasa life. After accepting sannyasa, Srila Prabhupada knew that it would only be a matter of time until he followed Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur’s instruction and traveled to the West to spread the mission of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

All glories to Srila Prabhupada!
